Peanuts

The peanut, also known as the groundnut, goober, pindar or monkey nut, is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds. It belongs to the family Fabaceae and has the scientific name Arachis hypogaea. Peanuts are characterized by their yellow, orange, cream or white flowers which produce ‘pegs’ that sink into the ground and develop pods containing one to three seeds. The seed is covered with a thin papery seed coat. Peanuts have been cultivated for centuries and are used in a variety of dishes around the world. They are also a great source of protein and healthy fats.
